Cooperation with the Paul Roos Gymnasium

The Paul Roos Gymnasium, together with its partners such as the Health Promoters, has initiated a wonderful new initiative . The River That Binds Us Project. This project is the result of years of dedication to the preservation of the First River. The project focuses on the impact that different communities (each with their own historical, cultural and socioeconomic circumstances) have on the First River. It recognizes how segregation among these communities negatively impacts the conservation and health of the river.

PRG joined forces with visual artist and candidate for the Social Impact Art Prize (SIAP), Abri de Swardt. After creative discussions with him, it was decided to launch an awareness campaign among the youth of Paul Roos and Kayamandi to inspire more cooperation between these two communities. The goal is to encourage students from other schools along the river to participate in the project in the coming years. Businesses are invited to participate in the initiative in 2024.

Health Promoters (who aim to break the link between poverty and disease), Dr Charon Buchner-Marais (University of Stellenbosch and CEO of CoGo), Unathi Msophi (Stellenbosch Trail Fund), Brigadier-General Farouk Davids (Faure community leader) and PRG staff accompanied pupils from Societas and The Legacy Centre in Kaymandi on a trip to the First River.

Health Promoters invited the Legacy Center students to join us on the trip. In 2024, we will connect with each other even more to do more events together.

The students visited four sites along the First River, from Stellenbosch (the origin of the river) to Macassar (the mouth of the river). The river’s water was tested at various points, cultural practices beside the river were examined, the impact of pollution was discussed, technical and conservation efforts were scrutinized, and possible solutions were brainstormed and proposed by the students.
This project was made possible by Investec (a proud supporter of Societas). Snack boxes were sponsored by the Social Impact Art Prize (in collaboration with The Rupert Museum). Feel free to read more about this initiative on the PRG website.
